Becoming Catholic (OCIA)

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.” [Mt. 28:19-20]

We are all called to evangelize in response to this great commission of Jesus. To evangelize as a Catholic in the world today means to be a living example by sharing and witnessing to others regarding our faith in Jesus and our love for Him.

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (O.C.I.A.), is the process, established for the universal Church, for individuals to become Catholic and receive the Sacraments of Initiation–Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The O.C.I.A. speaks of conversion as a “spiritual journey.”  Centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church He founded, this journey takes place through distinct stages, each marked by distinct liturgical rites, over a period of time suitable to bring about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the parish community, and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful.

There is no better way to describe the OCIA (Order of the Christian Initiation of Adults) than by quoting the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

§1229: “From the time of the apostles, becoming a Christian has been accomplished by a journey and initiation in several stages. This journey can be covered rapidly or slowly, but certain essential elements will always have to be present: proclamation of the Word, acceptance of the Gospel entailing conversion, profession of faith, Baptism itself, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and admission to Eucharistic communion.”

§1233: “The Second Vatican Council restored for the Latin Church ‘the catechumenate for adults, comprising several distinct steps.’ The rites for these stages are to be found in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).”
